Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
