The gravest possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C jump in mean temperatures to a two-metre rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and power requirements.

Possible Outcomes, Not Predictions

These consequences, certain ones are associated with critical climate thresholds, are considered as low probability but possible. The team stated that these models filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," said the professor who directed the research. "The nation has been planning in the absence of the methods to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied planners what they need to plan for environmental results they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Possibilities

A further series of dire projections sets out the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.

The probability of the extreme scenarios happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be implemented to combat global warming and how the Earth's systems will behave. This approach was likened to security threat evaluations or stress tests for economic stability.

Critical Scenario Highlights

  • Severe Heating: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts fails or if powerful amplifying effects like the Amazon rainforest dying emit its huge repository of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heat domes and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. The analysis developed the severe projections using a blend of real-world events, climate models and scientific theory. The scenarios do not take into account international cascading effects including the agricultural collapse and geopolitical instability.

The research was commissioned as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Previous assessments have stated that insufficient focus was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

Official experts has recommended that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and examine the risks for 4C. Past policy documents have been described as being "inadequate" by certain experts.
