Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
